Malted Chocolate Cake


  • 1 ¾ cup Flour
  • ¾ cup Cocoa
  • 2 cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Whole Milk
  • ½ cup Oil
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla

Malted Chocolate Frosting

  • 2 ¼ cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups Confectioner’s Sugar
  • ½ cup Chocolate Ovaltine or malted milk powder
  • ⅓ cup Whipping Cream
  • 2 teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt
  • ¼ cup Sour Cream
  • 9 ounces Milk Chocolate
  1. Preheat oven to 350F; butter and line 3 round 8×8″ cake pans with parchment paper
  2. Mix together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in large bowl until combined; in separate bowl, mix eggs, milk, oil and vanilla extract; add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients; beat with mixer until well incorporated
  3. Divide evenly among 3 pans; bake for 25 minutes; cook 2 pans then the 3rd pan last
  4. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, remove cakes from pans and cool on rack

Malted Chocolate Frosting

  1. Combine all ingredients except melted chocolate in food processor; pulse until well combined
  2. Take the lid off and check to make sure the ingredients on the bottom are well incorporated, use a spatula to mix if necessary
  3. Add melted chocolate; pulse a few times until the frosting is creamy and spreadable
  4. Use to fill layers and cover cake
